Antivirus
Antivirus software is a category of tools that monitor a device for files and activity that look out of the ordinary. Modern suites do much more than scan files: they watch running processes, check websites before they load, flag risky downloads, and in most cases run quietly in the background.
How modern antivirus works
There are several complementary techniques used together in a typical suite:
- Signature matching compares files to known patterns. Fast and reliable for anything that has been seen before.
- Heuristic analysis looks for code that behaves like something unwanted, even if it has not been seen before.
- Behavioural monitoring watches processes at runtime. If a program starts encrypting files or making unusual network calls, it can be flagged.
- Cloud-assisted detection checks files against a continuously updated database hosted by the vendor, so recognition does not rely on what's installed locally.
- Web and email protection warns you about websites or attachments with a poor reputation before you interact with them.
Features worth comparing
- Real-time background scanning
- Web and email checks
- Behavioural/ransomware protection
- Built-in VPN (or not)
- Password manager and identity monitoring
- Number of devices covered per subscription
- Platform coverage (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS)
- Independent lab results and performance impact
